Berlin - Locations Visited

The Reichstag - the scene, in 1933, of the infamous fire used as a lever on power at the birth of the Third Reich. Its capture by the Red Army, in May 1945, came amidst the Reich's death-throes.

The Brandenburg Gate - Frederick the Great's Triumphal Arch which itself has had a chequered past. Representing in its day Imperial and then Nazi greatness, then at odds with Communist ideology, it became the focus of celebration in 1989 as the Berlin Wall came down. The nearby Pariser Platz is currently being rebuilt to become again the diplomatic centre.

Soviet Memorial - commemorates the 5,000 Red Army troops who were killed in the battle for the Reichstag.

Third Reich Government Buildings - tour the former East Berlin visiting a number of locations associated with the Third Reich's governmental apparatus including Goebbels' Propaganda Ministry and Goering's Air Ministry Buildings both of which are still standing and are now housing Ministries of the Federal Government as it re-establishes Berlin as the administrative capital of a united Germany. A short distance from the Air Ministry stood the Reich Security Offices including the Gestapo and SS headquarters. The original buildings have long since gone and the Topography of Terror exhibition now occupies the site of the Gestapo building. Next door the SS offices were housed in the Hotel Prinz Albrecht whilst extensive records of "enemies of the state" were kept around the corner in the Prinz-Albrecht-Palais itself also destroyed. Walking further one comes to the site of the New Chancellery designed by Albert Speer in 1938 and destroyed by the Soviets who used some of its marble for their War Memorial and military cemetery. The Fuhrerbunker was part of the New Chancellery complex. The bunker lay in the so-called "Death Strip" of the Berlin Wall for many years. Reunification has raised the problem of what to do with the site.

1936 Olympic Stadium - the 1936 Games were intended as a propaganda exercise to declare the supremacy of the Aryan Race and the stadium is an undeniably impressive reminder of the grandiose style of Nazi architecture. The Olympic Roll of Honour is intrinsically interesting. It lists the names of now forgotten athletes but omits Jesse Owens.

Sachsenhausen - this Concentration Camp illustrates the brutal reality of the Nazi state. Used to train SS Guards, the gatehouse and compound, workshop, two barracks and the pathology laboratory still exist as well as one wing of the solitary confinement block.

The Wannsee Villa (closed on Mondays) - the Wannsee conference to determine the final solution was convened here on January 20, 1942, at 11am.

The Berlin Wall - throughout the tour, you will come across preserved sections of the Wall and be able to follow its course through the city. Some of the best-preserved sections are near the former Air Ministry building.

Potsdamer Platz - said to be the busiest square in Europe in pre-war days. It is currently the biggest building site in Europe as the former heart of the city is rebuilt having been ripped out to improve the field of view of the guards on the Wall.

Pariser Platz - the location for many of the foreign embassies now under reconstruction.

Bergen-Belsen - a reminder of the horrific reality of the Final Solution. The first camp to be liberated by British troops in April, 1945. The original buildings were burnt to prevent the spread of disease among the survivors. The mass graves and Memorials now on the site of the original camp stand as permanent witness to Nazi genocide. An early departure is required to include a Belsen visit.
