The Menin Gate Memorial commemorates almost 55,000 Missing of the Ypres Salient. They include soldiers from Britain, Canada, Australia, South Africa and the Indian subcontinent. The Last Post is sounded every evening to commemorate the fallen.

Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery is the prime location of more than four years of violent war. The visitor centre shares the story of the cemetery, the largest hospital cemetery in the Ypres Salient with almost 11,000 victims, representing 30 nationalities.

The mass grave and the old cemetery contain many of the casualties of the Student Battalions who encountered the professionals of the British Expeditionary Force in the First battle of Ypres. In total over 44,000 Germans are buried at Langemark Cemetery.

In 1915, during the Second battle of Ypres, the Canadian army surgeon John McCrae wrote “In Flanders Fields”. This is the site of an Advanced Dressing Station & the surgeons’ dug-outs, protected by the canal bank. Private Strudwick, the second youngest British casualty of the war is buried here.

Passchendaele Museum British Trench The Passchendaele Museum

The Museum commemorates the 1917 battle. The underground exhibition focuses on the battle,  open air trenches and a new remembrance gallery. The platoon experience  is a popular choice with groups. (pupils must be +14 years).

Spanbroekmolen was the site of the largest of the Messines mines. On the 7th June 1917 nineteen mines were detonated in rapid succession under the German front line at the beginning of the Battle of Messines.

Located in The Cloth Hall, the museum focuses on the stories of individuals within the larger picture of the Great War and the consequences of war. Stories are told through various objects on display & interactive installations.

Tyne Cot Cemetery is the resting place of 11,954 soldiers of the Commonwealth Forces. It has the largest number of burials contained in any Commonwealth cemetery of either the Great war or WW2.
