Geography School trips to Londons' Bankside: Urban Change Study

Our Geography School trips to the Bankside area of London is part of a series of four educational study tour modules which focus on issues & case studies relating to urban geography: rebranding, regeneration, redevelopment, environmental quality & sustainability.You can choose 2 case studies to cover on a 2-day tour.

We can tailor your specific visits to cover your students' learning objectives. Please ask to speak to one of our Geography Consultants to discuss your requirements.

A 1-day itinerary is possible (for schools within 120 miles of London) which would focus on 1 case study of your choice. Please discuss this with one of our Tour Administrators.

  • School pick-up (no earlier than 06.00 hours) & travel to London
  • Explore the Bankside area between Millennium Bridge & Tower Bridge & visit Borough Market (fieldwork tasks & activities provided)
  • Optional activity (e.g. London Eye or Tower Bridge Exhibition - see leisure options for other choices available)
  • Return to school with evening drop-off (time dependent on school location)

Two-Day Tour (including a coastal management study)

 
  • Day 1: School pick-up (earliest 06.00 hours) & travel to Margate & Herne Bay
  • Day spent examining the coastline along Herne Bay & at Margate, focusing on coastal management & protection
  • Travel to London
  • Check-in at accommodation & evening meal
  • Optional evening activity (see leisure options)
  • Day 2: Morning: Visit to Bankside area (see 1-day itinerary|) or choose another case study from our range of London modules: Canary Wharf • King's Cross • Battersea • Olympic Park
  • Optional activity (e.g. Sight-seeing or London Eye - see leisure options for other possibilities from one hour to half-day duration)
  • Return to school with evening drop-off (time dependent on school location)

  • Our advice: Including some fun activities can help you sell the tour to your students especially if you have competition from other subjects

Globe 322x515   Millennium Bridge:  Opened in June, 2000, the bridge is an important point of access to Bankside.   
  Globe Theatre:  Along with the Swan  & the Rose, the original Globe Theatre  was at the heart of London's theatre & entertainment district in the 16th & 17th centuries.  
  The Anchor:   The last surviving riverside inn of Shakespeare's day, The Anchor was the haunt of pirates & smugglers as well as actors. Pepys watched the Great Fire of London here in 1666.  
  The Clink Prison:  Opened in 1144, the Clink operated as a prison for more than 600 years. Its name became a slang word for prisons everywhere.    
  Golden Hinde II:  This ocean-going replica of Drake's ship is a popular attraction for adults & school groups.   
  Borough Market:  There has been a market on this site for over 800 years. It is now becoming an increasingly popular tourist destination.   
  Tower Bridge:  An exhibition covers engineering, history & economic & demographic factors leading to the bridge's construction.

Kath has travelled extensively in Europe & has led numerous field trips within the UK for GCSE Geography groups. She is also a Subject Specialist Consultant for Galina & is currently helping to develop our range of UK tours.

Kath has taught in secondary schools in Runcorn for 16 years up to A-Level standard. A former Head of Geography with GCSE examining experience, she has also taught History & Religious Studies.
