Guides

Galina can provide specialist guides for History, Geography, English, Religious Studies & Maths of War.  You will find a list of our current guides below.  Many of them are graduates with teaching &/or examining experience.  All our guides have been CRB-checked.

Galina also provide Tour Directors in all subjects. Their brief is to ensure the smooth running of your tour whilst you are on tour. They will assist you with checking-in at the ferry terminal & at your accommodation, finding your way around & dealing with any issues that may arise.

We can also arrange local guides for your group.

 

Trevor Boag, BA (Hons), PGCE

Degree in English & History.

35 years' experience as a teacher & AQA Examiner of English Language & Literature.

Deputy Head for 16 years & Acting Head for two years of a North Yorkshire Secondary School.

Prior to becoming a tour guide, Trevor had led school groups as a client with Galina for seven years.

Steve Clarke, BA (Hons), PGCE

Degree in History & PGCE from Hull University.

30 years' teaching experience in secondary schools in Hull.  Head of Humanities & prior to retiring was a Deputy Head.

A keen sportsman, Steve was captain of his local cricket club & is a member of Yorkshire County Cricket Club.

He has recently joined Galina, having led school groups as a client for a number of years.

Marcus Edwards, BSc (Hons), PGCE

Degree in Geology from the University of Birmingham.

13 years' experience as a Head of Department & 3 years as a Faculty Leader for Humanities.

Has been extensively trained in relation to AfL Strategies in Teaching & Learning.

AQA GCSE & A2 Examiner for Geography.

Developed Galina's Geography study packs & has an in-depth knowledge of the GCSE & AS/A Level specifications for this subject area.

Richard Gardiner

Professional actor for 26 years since leaving school at eighteen.

Richard's professional career has largely been spent in Theatre in Education.  Presents a one-man show in secondary schools based on the experience of the ordinary British Tommy during the First World War.

Conducted extensive research on north-west local regiments in the First World War.

Has worked for Galina since 2003 guiding numerous tours to the Western Front for both History & English Departments.

Bruce Hubbard, BA (Hons), PGCE, DASE

Degree in History.

Has taught in secondary education for over 30 years in Liverpool & is a former Head of Humanities.

Bruce is a local councillor & former Mayor of Maghull in Liverpool

Long-standing interest in the First World War, member of Western Front Association (Merseyside Branch) & Great War Forum.

Has worked for Galina since 2007 & was a school client for several years previously.

Trevor Magee, BA (Hons), PGCE, MA

Degree in English from University of Ulster, PGCE from Moray House College, Edinburgh & MA (English) from Reading University.

Has over 30 years' experience teaching English Literature in F.E. & Sixth Form Colleges in  Southern England & Belfast.

Has worked for Galina since 2008.

Steve Lomas, M Ed, BA, Cert Ed

Masters in History of Education from Manchester University.

Steve has over 30 years' experience teaching History, having been Head of History in 3 different schools during this time. He has also been Head of Year & G&T Co-ordinator.

Steve has been an examiner for OCR, Edexcel & AQA & a senior examiner for Edexcel GCSE SHP.

Julian Maslin BSc, MSc, PGCE

First degree in Geography & Geology, University of London, MSc in Geomorphology from Sheffield University, PGCE (Distinction) from University of London.

Has worked in education for more than 30 years lecturing in Geography & Earth Sciences at tertiary level & has been a Faculty Manager & Senior Lecturer for the last ten years.  Geography examiner for both GCSE & AS/A2.

Primarily a Geography guide, Julian also has an excellent knowledge of the Western Front.

Barry Matthews, BA (Hons), PGCE, MA, PhD

Degree in English & History, PGCE University of Bath (Distinction in Teaching Practice), MA in Military History from the University of Liverpool.

Recently completed a PhD on the service career, poetry & legacy of Wilfred Owen at the Centre for First World War Studies, Birmingham University.

17 years' experience as an English teacher, Head of Department & Head of Faculty.

AQA Examiner of English Language & YEB GCSE 16+ examiner for Spoken English.

Ian Riley, TD, BSc (Hons), MA, FSA Scot.

Degree in Physics from the University of Liverpool & MA (Distinction) in First World War Studies from the University of Birmingham.

Former Head of Mathematics in a large secondary school.

Has experience as a TA Officer with the HQ of 24 (Airmobile) Brigade of the British Army.

Other interests include working with the Liverpool Scottish Regimental Museum; member of the King’s Regiment Museum Advisory Committee. Ian is also a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, a member of the Royal United Service Institute & the Mathematics Association.

Currently working on an PhD in First World War Studies at Birmingham University.

Robin Stewart, BEd, DSME, Cert Ed.

Over 30 years' experience as a teacher / lecturer.

Has taught English Language / Literature & Drama in both secondary & higher education.

Has organised numerous residential experiences for students including theatrical productions, sports & battlefield tours during his teaching career.

Has worked as a guide with Galina since January 2008, leading tours to France, Belgium & the Netherlands.

Prior to becoming a tour guide, Robin had led school groups as a client with Galina for four years.

Leonard Trim, BA (Hons), PGCE

First Class Honours degree in History from the Open University & PGCE from Edinburgh University. Honours level courses in both medieval & modern history from Dundee University.

Has taught History in Scotland for 12 years up to Advanced Higher level & was an examiner for the SQA.

Prior to his career in teaching, Len was a paratrooper & member of the 1st Battalion The Parachute Regiment. He also took part in the jump scenes in the filming of 'A Bridge Too Far'.

Prior to becoming a Galina Guide, Len led many school group tours to the Western Front.

Jack Tucker, B.Ed, MA

B.Ed. & MA (Distinction) from Birmingham University.

Over 30 years' experience teaching History in comprehensive schools in Birmingham & Solihull. Has also taught local history & genealogy in adult education.

Secretary of the Western Front Association (Birmingham Branch). Currently writing an updated history of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment in the Great War. Member of the Great War Forum.

Prior to becoming a Galina Guide in 2005, Jack led school groups as a client with Galina for several years.
