The Rhine ValleyA region inundated with historic towns, romantic castles and rolling vineyards provides a delightful setting in which to practise language skills. Your students will not forget their visit. |
Suggested Locations |
| Boppard - Boppard is a well-renowned health resort as well as being a popular conference centre and tourist attraction. Excellent wine is produced on the nearby slopes of the Rhine. The remains of the Roman and medieval town wall, together with a romanesque and a gothic church bear witness to the town's 2.000 year history. |
| St Goar - derived its Middle Ages prominence by the serendipitous position of a large quartz seam that made the Rhine non-navigable just upstream. This forced all cargo to bypass the quartz section by wagon, after which it would be loaded back onto the boats at Bacharach. |
| Rheinfels Castle - nicely restored and situated on a ridge with a commanding view of the river. Supposedly, there are tunnels that extend from the castle all the way down to St. Goar, and even under the river to the castle across the valley. It is claimed that there are several hundred corpses of Spanish troops sealed into a tunnel beneath the castles. They were lured in and then entombed. |
| Koblenz - lies at the confluence of the Rhine and the Moselle. The Kurfürstliches Schloss, Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, Schloss Stolzenfels and the Deutsches Eck ("German Corner") with the impressive Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial are all an absolute must for every visitor. Many interesting museums document the great traditions of the past and the annual calendar is packed with fascinating cultural and social events. |
| Stolzenfels Castle - probably the best known of the Rhine castles, built around the middle of the l3th century to collect customs duties and rebuilt by the Prussian royal family during the Romantic age. Despite the inclusion of the medieval castle keep and the residential tower, with its flat roofs, pergola garden and terraces, the castle has an almost Mediterranean serenity about it. |
| Phantasialand - one of Europe´s largest amusement and adventure parks with a total of 280,000 sq yards of fun for all ages: Western Express, wildwater sliding, bob-sliding, Las Vegas-Show and many other attractions. Take advantage of the many opportunities to develop language skills. |
