Geography School trips to Liverpool & Snowdonia: Urban Change & Glaciation Study

Combining both physical and human fieldwork opportunities, this 2-day Geography School trip to Liverpool & Snowdonia will enable your students to complete their GCSE fieldwork requirements for most of the exam boards.

We can provide data collection sheets for students to use or adapt depending upon your learning objectives.

The suggested itinerary below is based upon fieldwork in Liverpool and the Nant Ffrancon Valley but if preferred, we can substitute the Nant Ffrancon Glacial study with one in the Great Langdale Valley.

Snowdonia: Glaciation & Impact of Tourism

Locations

  River-Llugwy-Betws-y-Coed-Geography-school-trips-to-Snowdonia-North-Wales

Nant Ffrancon Valley Floor   Nant Ffrancon Valley:  The steepness of the rock lip & depth of the Valley are the result of the convergence & erosive power of two glaciers; the Ogwen Valley Glacier from the south-west & Llanberis Valley Glacier from the south-east.

Cwm Idwal & Ogwen Cottage:  The steep slabs at the back of Cwm Idwal are popular with climbers & abseilers. Ogwen Cottage is now a hostel used as a base for climbing & walking.

Activities in the Valley:  The are several sheep farms in the Valley. Cattle & pigs are also kept on the flat valley floor. The Penryhn Slate Quarry is at the northern end of the Valley.

Betws-y-Coed & Llanberis:  Good transport links & proximity to Llandudno, Mount Snowdon & Nant Ffrancon have made these villages honey-pot sites for tourists.

Dinorwig HEP:  Dinorwig (also known as Electric Mountain) offers a case study focusing on the sustainable generation of hydro-electricity.
        logo
Llandudno:  The main occupations in Llandudno in the first half of the 19th century were copper mining, fishing & agriculture. Between 1857 & 1877, Llandudno was specifically developed as a holiday resort, taking advantage of good railway connections. The limestone cliffs of the Great Orme provide ideal nesting sites for a variety of sea birds. Llandudno also provides opportunities to investigate coastal processes & landforms.

Urban Study

Liverpool: Regeneration of the City

Locations

  Albert-Dock-Geography-school-trips-Liverpool

Liver Building

Albert Dock:  The Albert Dock closed in 1972 due to the decline of Liverpool's docks in the wake of  containerisation. Formerly derelict, today, it is the most-visited multi-use attraction in the UK outside London & the largest single collection of Grade I listed buildings anywhere in the country.

Urban Transect:  Suggested locations for data collection are based in Hale Village, Speke, Dingle & Toxteth, Chinatown & Liverpool One. We can advise specific sites where students can visit to carry out their fieldwork.

Pier Head:  The Royal Liver,  Cunard & Port of Liverpool Buildings are all Grade I or II* listed & sometimes referred to as The Three Graces. All were built at the beginning of the 20th century. The Cunard Building now houses the British Music Experience.

Liverpool ONE:  This new  shopping  &  leisure development has rejuvenated the City Centre & boosted the local economy. It includes public spaces, retail outlets, offices, leisure facilities & apartments. Chavasse Park provides a nearby green space.
