History School trips to London - Medicine & Public Health (1 or 2 Days)

Our History School trips to London are designed to complement the Thematic Study section of the History GCSE (9-1) and WJEC GCSE specifications.  The following areas can be studied depending on which visits you want to include: developments in surgery, nursing, public health & the development of penicillin.
 
We can tailor your tour to cover your students' specific learning objectives. Please ask to speak to one of our team to discuss your requirements.

One-Day Tour (for schools within approximately 120 miles of London)

  • School pick-up (no earlier than 06.00 hours) & travel to London. Visits include:
  • Old Operating Theatre & Public Health Walk
  • Choose up to two other visits from: Fleming Laboratory • Science Museum • Florence Nightingale Museum
 
  • Study packs provided
  • Optional visit: IWM (see above)
  • Optional activity (e.g. London Eye or sight-seeing - see leisure options for other choices available)
  • Return to school with evening drop-off (time dependent on school location)

  • Afternoon visits to the Science Museum & Alexander Fleming Laboratory (IWM could be included as an alternative)

  • Check-in at accommodation & evening meal

  • Day 2: Depart after breakfast to visit:
  • Old Operating Theatre & Public Health Walk
  • Hunterian Museum (closing in May 2017) or Florence Nightingale Museum

  • With an extra day you can include further investigations and/or fun activities or

  • Two nights' half-board accommodation
  • Our advice: Including some fun activities can help you sell the tour to your students especially if you have competition from other subjects

Alexander Fleming Laboratory

 
Old Operating Theatre:  Displays include the public viewing stands, wooden operating table & surgical instruments. The Herb Garret was used for storing herbs used by the hospital's apothecary. The public health walk focuses on living conditions in Victorian London & the fight against cholera.
 
     
  Fleming's Laboratory:  The laboratory where Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin in 1928. Displays and video explain how a chance discovery ushered in the age of antibiotics.   
     
  Science Museum:  The Museum currently offer two relevant exhibitions: Journeys through Medicine (Henry Wellcome's Legacy) & Wounded: Conflict, Casualties and Care (till June 2018)  
     
 

Florence Nightingale Museum:  The museum explains Florence Nightingale's life & legacy from her privileged childhood & struggle against convention to the crisis in the military hospitals in the Crimea. Her work as a campaigner for health reform is also considered.

Some of the activities below take a relatively short amount of time (up to an hour). Others require a longer period where it would be best to allocate 2 to 3 hours to get the full value.
