Literary London: Shakespeare & Dickens English School Trips (1 or 2 Days)

Though born in Stratford in the Midlands, Shakespeare's professional career was centred on the area around Southwark where the recreation of the Globe Theatre now stands. Dickens is another author indelibly associated with London. He described the city as a ‘magic lantern’ and many of his novels not only use London as a backdrop but are actually about the city and its character.

Our Literary London trips cover both these authors in a two-day tour ideal for students studying their works at GCSE or GCE and also as a generally educational experience for KS3. The tour includes an organised theatre workshop based upon a Shakespeare play of your choice or an aspect of theatrical production & tailored to your students specification requirements (for GCSE & A Level groups). In addition to the theatre workshop there are also two optional guided walks of the city to provide some period context to the world Shakespeare or Dickens would have known.

At GCSE this tour will be especially relevant to Assessment Objectives 1 ('develop an informed personal response') and 3 ('understanding of the relationships between texts and the contexts in which they were written').

At A level the tour will help to 'develop knowledge and understanding of the contexts in which texts have been produced and received and understanding of how these contexts influence meaning'.

A one-day tour focusing on either Dickens or Shakespeare is also available for schools within 120 miles of London - please see the relevant page of the website for our other Shakespeare themed tours.

Performances and Workshops

Workshops & Tours

The Globe Theatre offers workshops for all Key Stages from KS2 to 5. They are about 90 minutes long and include a tour of the theatre itself (30 minutes) followed by the workshop (60 minutes). You can combine this with a visit to the Globe Exhibition (additional fee applies). The workshop can be based upon a Shakespeare play of your choice. It provides a practical introduction to the performance conditions at the Globe, exploring how this shapes playing style & language. The workshop can augment national curriculum study of a Shakespeare text for coursework or exam study at KS4, making connections between time & literary traditions & exploring language as a key to engaging with character & structure.

Workshops & guided walks are offered by the Dickens Museum; please contact our office for full details.

Performances

The theatre performances change regularly so its best to check the 'What's On at the Globe Theatre' section of their website for details of current performances. There is also information on this page about any Shakespeare performances currently on at theatres in the West End.
