Waterloo

See the battle through the eyes of the Duke of Wellington and Napoleon. This history tour gives a unique insight into the thinking, strategy and mistakes that ultimately decided who won the day.

Locations Visited

Hougoumont - This farm was the scene of Jerome Bonaparte's diversionary attacks. We will consider their significance in the battle as increasing numbers of French reserves were drawn into the fierce fighting around the farm buildings.

La Haye Sainte - Napoleon's main assaults were directed against the troops in this farm and surrounding area beginning with d'Erlon's Corps, repulsed by the famous charge of the Household and Union Brigades and continuing with Ney's cavalry charges against the British squares during the afternoon. Ney's capture of La Haye Sainte in the early evening caused the Allied centre to waver. Wellington took swift action to plug the gaps in his line.

Papelotte - Napoleon belatedly committed the Old Guard to battle and the significance of their failure is considered in the light of the Prussians' arrival. Finally, Wellington gave the order for the whole line to advance.
