Art School trips to Amsterdam (4 Days)

Our Art School trips to Amsterdam are suitable for Art & Design students at both GCSE & A-Level. There are opportunities to study fine art, decorative objects, photography, furnishings & to sample the architecture of the "Venice of the North". The jewels in Amsterdam's crown are undoubtedly the Rijksmuseum, re-opened after a decade-long renovation, the Stedelijk, also refurbished & extended & the van Gogh Museum which has the largest collection of the artist's work in the world. There are also two photography museums - Foam & Huis Marseille - as well as the canalside 17th century patrician's house belonging to the van Loon family & the Hermitage Amsterdam - a branch of the Hermitage in St Petersburg. 

You will also be able to relax & enjoy some free time in Amsterdam with a canal trip, shopping in the Nine Streets near Dam Square or one of several other possibilities highlighted in the leisure section of this itinerary. Day One:  Outward Travel

Amsterdam Canal Bridge

  • School pick-up (06.00-08.00 hours:) & travel to Amsterdam via Dover
  • Check-in at accommodation in Amsterdam. Full-board for three nights

Day Two:  Amsterdam 

  • Morning visit to the Rijksmuseum
  • Afternoon visit to the van Gogh Museum
  • See list for alternative venues or suggest your own
  • Stedelijk Museum
  • Rembrandthuis
  • Hermitage, Amsterdam
  • Foam Photography Museum
  • Huis Marseille
  • Museum van Loon
  • Optional day-time or evening activity (e.g. canal cruise - see leisure options for other choices) 
  • Return to accommodation & evening meal

 Day Three:  Amsterdam

  • Morning visit to the Stedelijk Museum
  • Alternatively, choose another venue from our list or one of your own choice
  • Optional activity (e.g. Free afternoon in Dam Square & the Nine Streets - see leisure section for other choices)
  • Evening option also possible
  • Optional activities can range from one or two hours to a half or full day
  • Return to accommodation & evening meal

Day Four:  Return

  • Depart after breakfast & travel to Calais
  • Return ferry to Dover & onward travel to school
  • Evening drop-off at school

The Rijksmuseum

Opened in 1885, the Rijksmuseum contains collections reflecting a broad range of Dutch Art & History from the Middle Ages to 1900 as well as works from other European countries. Undoubted highlights include the Golden Age masterpieces by Rembrandt, Vermeer, Frans Hals, Jan Steen & Ferdinand Bol. The Rijksmuseum has over 8,000 objects on display amonsgt which are ceramics, silverware, a textiles & costume collection, furniture & an Asian Collection which is located in the new Asian Pavilion.

The Stedelijk Museum is dedicated to modern and contemporary art & design. Its collection includes works by van Gogh, Cézanne, Picasso, Matisse,  Chagall, Mondrian & Kandinsky with works also by later 20th century artists such as Warhol. Lichtenstein & de Kooning. Even the refreshment kiosk is worth a visit with murals by Karel Appel, a founder member of the CoBrA movement in the 1940s. Since the 1970s, the museum has also built up a significant video art collection which now has more than 900 works.

The Van Gogh Museum has the largest collection of the artist's work in the world with more than 200 paintings including The Potato Eaters, Sunflowers,Almond Blossom & Wheatfield with Crows as well as a number of still life pieces, landscapes & self-portraits. There are also 400 drawings & 700 letters. The museum also features notable works by several of van Gogh's contemporaries in the Impressionist & Post-Impressionist Movements including Gauguin, Toulouse-Lautrec & Pissarro.

The Rembrandthuis was the artist's home from 1639 until his bankruptcy in 1656. The inventory of contents taken at that time forms the basis for the recreation of its appearance in the 17th century with furniture, objets d'art & paintings by the artist himself, Peter Lastman, his teacher & by some of his pupils & contemporaries such as Ferdinand Bol. The house contains a collection of almost all Rembrandt's etchings & paintings. A tour of the house includes the kitchen, living room & Rembrandt's studio.

For many teachers (& their students) a visit to Amsterdam is not only a learning opportunity but also a chance to experience the city. Some of the activities below take a relatively short amount of time (up to an hour). Others require a longer period where it would be best to allocate 2 to 3 hours to get the full value.   • Dam Square & the Nine Streets. This central square is always bustling. The nearby Nine Streets are packed with vintage & designer shops


  • Flea markets: Amsterdam has more than 40 markets Try the Noordemarkt in the Jordaan district or haggle at the Waterlooplein market 
  • Bloemenmarkt: Located on the Singel Canal, this floating flower market, with stalls on canal houseboats,  is the only one of its kind in the world.
