Flood Management Coastal Study: Geography School Trips to The Netherlands

Our Geography School trips to the Netherlands include an examination of the Dutch reaction to the devastating floods of 1953 which also affected the UK's east coast. The floods caused widespread damage & some loss of life; the Dutch response was imaginative, thorough & effective, utilising both hard & soft engineering techniques to manage the coastal environment. Fieldwork tasks & activities are provided. Please ask to speak to one of our Geography Consultants (former teachers & Heads of Geography) to discuss your requirements.

This school tour is available over 3 or 4 days via Dover or Hull & can be combined with either of our trips to Amsterdam or Burgers' Zoo, Arnhem. There is also the option of combining with another subject such as Science, History or Religious Studies.

Dune Stabilisation Noordwijk

Oosterscheldt Storm Barrier: The barrier is 9 kilometres in length & is a key part of the Delta Works. Originally planned as a dam, protests from environmentalists & fishermen led to the addition of sluice gates to protect salt-water marine life.
Neeltje Jans: This is an artificial island built to facilitate construction of the barrier. Subsequently, it became both a tourist attraction & an educational facility explaining the purpose of the Delta Works.
Maeslant Barrier & Rotterdam: The Maeslant Barrier is the final element of the Delta Works. Its two huge gates close automatically when required. It is    one of largest moving structures on Earth. Groups can also choose to look at some of the plans to 'flood-proof' Rotterdam including sunken piazzas & floating housing.
Haringvliet Sluices: The Sluices are 5 kilometres in length & maintain the flow of salt water into the Maas & Rhine rivers to prevent freezing in cold weather & preserve the ecological balance.
Noordwijk aan Zee: Noordwijk is a town on the Dutch coast (pop: 25,000). The main industries in the 19th century were fishing & bulb growing. Fishing has declined but has been replaced by tourism. Soft engineering such as beach replenishment & dune stabilisation counter erosion.
