Following some very detailed and productive discussions with representatives from the main exam boards at the Geographical Association’s Conference in Manchester last week, our Geography Consultant team met on Monday to update our Field trips & study materials.
As the key focus of fieldwork will now be to ‘assess, justify and evaluate’ the data collected and the methods used, Galina has decided that our study tours will provide opportunities for GCSE students to carry out data collection during the tour and allow time for the students to reflect on what, how and why they did this data collection.
Our study packs and Geography guides will also include an exam-style question relating to fieldwork as part of the tour. This can then be used by teachers to assess the learning during the fieldtrip and demonstrate progress.

It is hoped that this will help Geography teachers to prepare their students for the final exams and remove the need for them to spend time on producing resources and researching suitable locations for data collection, Galina will do this for them.
As an ex-Geography teacher myself, it’s good to see that fieldwork is being promoted again by the exam boards and that students will get to experience some practical geography on at least two occasions during their GCSE studies.
