Last month York Consulting gave its final independent evaluation of Learning Away residential trips establishing the benefits for students long after they return to school.
The Learning Away project funded by the Paul Hamlym Foundation and is one of the Foundation's five current Education and Learning special initiatives, working in partnership with schools in the UK to enhance young people's learning through high-quality residential trip experiences.
The report gives evidence of the beneficial impact of residentials in the following areas:
Follow-up surveys conveyed, 84% of secondary students said because of the residential they got on better with fellow pupils in the class.
Staff student relationships improved both in terms of trust & respect. |

87% of secondary school students had felt more confident to try new things.
79% of secondary school students indicated that the residential had made them realise that what they learnt in school is important to them.
60% of secondary students felt they had a better understanding of what they were trying to learn, whilst 82% of Key Stage two said their teachers & lessons on the residential helped them learn.

61% of students who attended Calderglen's drama residential trip achieved higher than the grade that was predicated, compared to 21% of pupils who did not attend
82% of secondary students & 75% of Key Stage two students indicated their residential trip experience helped them realise they could get on with people from other classes or school. |

Before the residential only 40% of secondary students felt that they could be role models however after the trip this rose to 67% of pupils.
78% of teachers involved felt that Learning Away had significant or transformative impact on their understanding of their students' strengths & limitations.
